Salaba Bloemen- en Plantenexport B.V. is a family business with a deep passion for flowers and plants. In 1978, Karl and Rita Salaba founded the company, with supermarkets in Austria—Karl’s country of origin—as its first sales market.
In the early years, flowers and plants were transported to Austria via external transport companies—a method we still use today because of its efficiency and reliability. From the very beginning, the focus has been on quality, freshness, and service—values that remain central to this day.
A few years later, the company expanded its activities and began supplying supermarkets in Germany as well. This proved to be an important step: demand grew, and with it, the company.
When Ernie Salaba became increasingly involved in the family business, a period of change began.
Ernie and Rita decided to stop supplying supermarkets and instead focus on the trading and export side of the business.
Although Karl initially did not fully agree, it proved to be the right course—laying the foundation for Salaba’s further growth into an international player.
During the same period, Ernie also began trading with Eastern Europe, particularly Poland—at the time still an untapped market.
He was one of the first to become active there, creating new opportunities and significantly expanding the customer base.
In 2005, Ernie officially took over the company. Today, the third generation—Jurgen and Tim—are also actively and enthusiastically involved in the family business.

Import & assortment
In addition to our export activities, we also import part of our assortment. For example, we source:
- Roses, gypsophila, and alstroemerias from Ecuador,
- Carnations from Colombia,
- And a wide range of cut flowers and cut foliage from Italy.
Thanks to our direct sourcing—with both a buyer in the Netherlands and a purchasing manager in South America—we are able to guarantee our customers a versatile, fresh, and high-quality assortment every single day, always at the most competitive prices
